Kubotans – A
highly effective self-defense device
Kubotans are a highly popular
martial arts weapon. They are shaped like a short
pencil and are made of aluminum. They are designed
to increase the power of your strike when held
in your hand. There’s no need trying to
be overly precise when trying to hit someone,
just start jabbing. You can use the kubotan to
target points such as the groin, stomach, solar
plexus, throat, the arm, the shin, the hipbone,
the collarbone, the ankle or the kneecap. A sharp
strike to a bony part of the body will cause intense
pain to your attacker and encourage them to stop
attacking. Using a kubotan, a harder, well-placed
blow can easily break bones. These weapons are
highly effective for self-defense if you know
how to use them.
The most basic applications consist
of striking at or poking vulnerable areas of the
body with the kubotan. As a general rule, swinging
strikes work better against bony surfaces due
to the force available from the swing. Jabbing
or stabbing thrusts work best against fleshy parts
– the jabbing motion provides more penetration
and can reach in and bruise internal organs. Keeping
this in mind, all you have to remember to be effective
is to swing at bony parts and stab at fleshy parts.
The nerves near bony parts are close to the surface
of the skin, so even a glancing blow will cause
your attacker a considerable amount of pain.
When using a kubotan, there are
no bad strikes. Just punch or jab as hard as you
can to whatever body part you can reach the easiest.
Kubotans are small enough to be carried easily,
but there effect is greater than their size. They
can be used to harden blows delivered by your
fist, to apply pressure to sensitive parts of
an assailant’s body, or to gain leverage
on an assailant’s wrist or fingers.
